Tips for Researching Neighborhoods Before You Buy
Most buyers want to “test drive” the neighborhood they are thinking about buying a home in before they put in an offer. Because a home is a larger purchase, you should be positive that you really like what it has to offer before you make the investment. Here are some helpful tips on how to go about your research.
Real Life Encounter
The only way to really get a sense of a neighborhood is to live a few days in it. If you don’t have friends or family to stay with, consider getting a hotel room or even an Airbnb nearby. Stay a couple of days to see what a weekday and weekend day in the area is like. Take a stroll or drive at different times of day to observe the general activity and noise levels. You may be fortunate enough to meet some residents to get a real feeling of what it is like.
Routine
Other than the general activity in the area, it is wise to test out your daily commute or routes that you will be taking regularly. See how long it takes to get to work, how quick it is to get to the grocery store, the gym or wherever else you will often go. Also, if you are going to be walking or taking public transit then see what those options are and how easy it is to get around.
The Nightlife
Evening and weekend activities play a large role in what makes a location truly your “home.” Check some of your favorite things to do and invite some friends as you research the area. Find some dinner spots, museums, local bars or shopping areas that you could scope out. Inform your friends that you are reviewing the area and solicit their opinions. In the end, they will be the ones visiting you so it’s good to see what they think!
