Your Final Checklist When Moving
When you sell your home it is easy to remember all of the big picture tasks like packing, hiring movers and changing your address. However, there are lots of little things to accomplish where a checklist can help make your move go more smoothly. Here are 10 tips to follow for when you are going through your last and final move steps.
Check storage areas
Do one last check of all closets and storage spaces as you might have left some holiday decorations or small items that you forgot about. One final look in all cabinets and drawers is a good idea too.
Clear all smart devices
If you represented your home with these devices without clearly excluding them, then you will need to leave them. For any of these that are going to remain with the home, be sure that you reset them so that things are ready for the new owners.
Gather keys and codes
Consolidate all keys and remotes for the new owner. Also, record any pass codes for alarms or gates so that the buyer has all they need when they get settled.
Lock all windows
It is easy to forget to lock the windows when most are thinking about the doors always. There could be a few days when the home is left vacant and nobody wants any unwanted guests.
Move date coordination
Inform both your agent and the buyer about your moving details. You should have vacated by the time of closing, but keeping everyone abreast of your plans to avoid any potential conflicts.
Purchase protection items
Nearly everyone does some packing of items beforehand even if they have hired movers. Make sure you invest in some basic things like padding or blankets so that when you move things yourself you don’t scratch the floors or walls.
Basic cleaning supplies
Keep some of the cleaning necessities on hand until the last minute like rags, sponges, a bucket, the vacuum, all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, mop and trash bags.
Utilities
Notify utility companies when your closing dates are for the home you are selling and the one you are purchasing so that you have service and aren’t paying for more than you need to.
Take photos
It is a smart idea to photograph the property upon leaving for documentation. You don’t know what can happen afterwards with the buyer’s movers, etc. and this can help protect you.
Closing paperwork/docs
Most of your belongings will be packed away for your closing day, but keep some of the essentials handy in a file on you. Important things include your closing paperwork, your driver’s license, all remotes, keys and pass codes, information on any home devices or warranties and your checkbook for any last minute snags come about.
